Welcome to the Farm Design Website! My name is Robert Clouse, a freelance graphic designer and animator. Operating out of Los Angeles, CA, I offer quality, versatility, and over ten years of experience in motion graphics, interactive design, and illustration. I offer this site up as a sample of some of the work that I've done over the past 10 years. Feel free to take a look around. If you like what you see and are interested in finding out more, click the e-mail link at the bottom of the screen. For a good overview of the newest projects on this site, select projects from the "FEATURED WORK" section to the right. Feel free to contact me by email or phone to discuss proposals or quotes. I have extensive experience in interactive design over the last ten years. I have worked in the video game industry as an artist/producer/game designer, and also in the creative industry designing and authoring CD-Roms and websites for various corporations/organizations. I would like to continue my development as an interactive designer, and I am always looking for interesting projects. While cd-rom as a medium is pretty much dead, I feel that good interactive design trancends any medium. I started my career developing cd-rom materials for the video game industry, as well as many other areas. For about eight years I have been working in broadcast design. I worked full-time for a company called Atmosphere Pictures. I have worked on a variety of projects. I have provided graphics and animation for many corporate films created for the Tennessee Valley Authority. I have created show opens and graphics packages for many cable TV programs. I worked extensively with Atmosphere Pictures on the re-branding of the new TNN, creating network identity spots and promoting programming on TNN, such as Star Trek, James Bond, and other movie promotions. Illustration is the real passion for Farm Design. This site is built around my love of illustration. Because my formative years were spent consuming 70's crap culture, my main drawing style is a mix of Marvel Comics, Japanese anime' and Spumco. I can, however, tailor that style for most projects. Every so often I'll get the chance to work on a print project with a band or some other non-profit organization, usually low budget, but always fun. BOY GENIUS BAND BOY GENIUS TOMMY BOY RECORDS Boy Genius was a local punk band that actually got signed to Tommy Boy Records briefly in the mid 1990's. I started off doing show posters for them, and eventually got to design their major-label CD. ROLLERJAM SHOW OPEN JUPITER ENTERTAINMENT ATMOSPHERE PICTURES A Broadcast design projects while working at Atmosphere Pictures. In trying to re-brand roller derby for the 21st century, I illustrated several rollerjam atheletes in a comic-book manner. We then created the opening around them, animating the characters in a simple manner, and using motion blurs and halftone textures to get that comic book in motion feel. METRO PULSE COVERS METRO PULSE MetroPulse is Knoxville, Tennessee's weekly alternative news publication. On occasion I'd get a chance to illustrate a cover on one topic or another. THE SWAGMOBILE TNN: THE NATIONAL NETWORK The Swagmobile was a speculative project undertaken by Atmosphere Pictures. I submitted a few ideas for consideration. The vehicle itself was going to be some sort of traveling roadshow party mobile that promoted TNN. The artwork we created was to be shrinkwrapped on to a full-size van. I submitted a couple of different looks. SPIKEMAN SPIKE TV I was commisioned by Atmosphere Pictures to help concept ideas for SpikeTV's Video Game Awards broadcast. One of the concepts centered around designing a mascot for the awards show. The idea got nixed, but I did get several cool character designs out of the project, ranging from humorous to downright silly. To the left are a few of the over 20 designs I created for this project, some more realized than others. FARM RADIO I used to DJ on a pirate radio station, 90.0 FM KFAR in Knoxville, TN. I called my show Farm Radio, hoping to promote my freelance business as well as provide some good music to anyone within the 3-mile radius that was our listening area. I did some promotional posters, one for a fund raiser show, and two simply to promote my radio show. IMMORTAL CHORUS I got a chance to create some promotional material for Immortal Chorus. Budget was low, so I had to work with one- and two-color designs. Each of the posters is very large, about 18 x 36 inches. SPIKE TV VIDEO GAME AWARDS These spots were created to promote the first annual Spike TV Video Game Awards. INVASION IOWA SPIKE TV Graphics package for "Invasion Iowa", a Spike TV mini-series created for William Shatner. The concept was for William Shatner to go to Riverside Iowa, a small town in Iowa that was the ficticious birthplace of James T. Kirk. Once there, Shatner tells the townsfolk that he wants to film a science fiction movie there, and cast everyone in the town to be in it. Hilarity ensues. Spike wanted the spots to be in the same style as the "Jib-Jab" cartoons. DIY FYI DIY: DO-IT-YOURSELF NETWORK Project requires 30-second promotional spots that detail a short tutorial on a specific household task. Topics range from arts and crafts, automotive, lawn and garden, and home improvement. The spots were created in Flash in order to allow the network to use the materials for both web and broadcast simultaneously. TNN BRANDING Here are some various network IDs and promotional spots created for TNN as part of TNN's re-branding strategy to become the "Pop" network. Lot's of bright, primary colors and simple geometric shapes round out this look. TNN STAR TREK IDS Here are a few short network ids that I created to help promote Star Trek: The Next Generation for TNN. STAR TREK PROMOTIONS During my time at Atmosphere Pictures, we did a ton of work for TNN revolving around "Star Trek: The Next Generation." The company would travel to different conventions to get the fan's outlook on what Star Trek means. They also got the chance to interview many of the stars from both series, which we would then integrate into various station ids, marathons, and campaigns promoting Star Trek on TNN. As a closet Trekkie, these projects were pretty exciting, although now I can never, ever, watch that show or any of the movies ever, ever, again... RIGOLETTO This spot was created for the Knoxville Opera Company and was done while I was working at Atmosphere Pictures. We only had a couple of days to complete the spot, and the client's only request was to "do something different." I began storyboarding some ideas, and after a few frustrating hours we decided to scan my storyboards, colorize them in Photoshop, and animate them in After Effects. Essentially, storyboards became the concept for the spot, as if Verdi had to pitch Rigoletto in front of a bunch of suits in order to get it done. MADELEINE PEYROUX This is the website for Madeleine Peyroux, a well-known jazz vocalist, whose latest record, "Half The Perfect World", was recently released. CALLAWAY GOLF This application allows users to find out which Callaway Golf Driver fits them the best. The application uses Flash interactivity and video from various golf professionals to guide the user through the experience. BOYS and GIRLS CLUB KIOSK I was contracted to create an interactive application for an installation currently on display at the Knoxville, TN Convention Center. Through the use of a touch screen, the application allows users to search a database of the names of inductees into the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame. The user can search by category, class, or year. CMT LAS I was contracted by a Los Angeles company named Another Large Production to create a CD-Rom presentation for the new CMT: Country Music Television. The CD-Rom was created as collateral material for "Upfront," apparently a medai buyers convention that happens every year. The disc contains many resources in .pdf form: including posters, ad slicks, media order forms, as well as sample Quicktime movies of promotions and what-not. The client wanted the disc's look to reflect the new on-air look for CMT; a much more energetic and contemporary feel than the predecessor. FINELIVING" This CD-Rom contains downloadable pdfs of sales materials for advertising representatives, as well as an mp3 player. MTV2 LAUNCH TOOLS This CD-Rom contains downloadable pdfs of sales materials for advertising representatives, as well as an mp3 player. AARON RAPPOPORT ANOTHER LARGE PRODUCTION Promoitonal website created for Aaron Rappoport, a well-known Los Angeles-based photographer. QUINTILES THERAPEUTICS Created for Quintiles Laboratories in the spring of 2003, this CD-Rom touts the broad range of therapeutic expertise offered by Quintiles in the area of clinical trials. The project started off as simply a series of video clips of doctors and scientists talking about Quintiles. Bailey-Phillips and I filled out the content by adding some intense Flash animations at the beginning of each of the major sections. DIY "UPFRONT Created for DIY in the spring of 2003, this project was created to reinforce the image projected to media planners who attended DIY's Upfront presentation. The site allows the user to create his or her own DIYer, showing the many flavors of the viewing audience and supporting DIY's advertising potential. TVA WATERSHED V2 TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY Using interactive examples, maps, a timeline, and video, the TVA Watershed CD-Rom V2 teaches people how TVA manages the waterways in the region. The idea of balance in watershed management is reinforced by the waterdop icon, with each section of the drop representing one area of responsibility. This was a large project that was actually quite successful. CLUES IN CRIME DUKE UNIVERSITY ERROYO/KEY AND ASSOCIATES I was commisioned by Erroyo through Key and Associates Design to help design and produce this CD-Rom. "Clues in Crime" is an educational product created for Duke University's TIP program, which is basically distance learning for gifted middle schoolers. The CD teaches children about the role of the forensic scientist in criminal investigations. This is accomplished through a series of video lectures supplemented in each chapter by game-like interactive exercises relating to that chapter's topics. The CD also contains a glossary and a Case Files section, which details famous moments in forensic science history. PEACE and PROTEST I was commisioned by Erroyo through Key and Associates Design to help design and produce this CD-Rom. The CD also contains a glossary and a timline, taking the student on an extensive tour of the history of music in general. TVA GREEN POWER This presentation was created to promote TVA's "Green Power Switch" program. Our challenge was to help educate people about what renewable energy is and how it is generated. The presentation was created for installed touch-screen kiosks that are located in museums and parks throughout the Southeast region. The software was also distributed with a teacher's guide to schools and educators. The installation kiosks are also connected to an actual solar PV module which feeds the current conditons of temperature, energy generated, and wind speed to the software. Since the focus of project is on children, we took a bright/playful approach towards the look and feel. We created an animated, talking sun as the user's guide to the software, which gives illustrated, simple explanations of different kinds of renewable energy.
